My band goes to 11

My band at Plug N Play

I love shooting musicians because I'm a musician myself; I sing and play piano and electric bass. I recently started a new band with my friends Reid (drums) and Ron (guitar), and we had a rehearsal scheduled for today. I asked the guys if they minded if I got a few shots of us for Flickr 11|11|11, and they obliged.

The lighting in the rehearsal studio was dreadful, as I knew, but I wanted to capture it as close to possible as how we saw it. (Same philosophy applies when I shoot concerts; I never use flash for those.) The above shot in the mirror was the best of the lot. Before that I figured we'd all sit on the couch, which had the best lighting. Though I hate hate hate using a tripod and self-timer! Started out with a test shot with my Fender Mustang as my placeholder:

Then I joined the guys:

Then I locked the remote shutter in the on position, hoping to capture a little more natural interaction between us:

Eventually I took pity on the guys who were getting tired of sitting around. After getting the decent shot in the mirror, I took a few of them individually:

And finally, after our actual rehearsal, a shot suggested by Reid, as a tribute to Nigel Tufnel Day:

There you have it, 11 photos of our band rehearsing on 11-11-11. We're too new of a group to even have a name yet, but if you're in need of some cheap rehearsal space in San Francisco, do check out Plug N Play Club and tell 'em Ron Purser sent you so we get the referral credit. Much obliged!

I love that first one particularly--you look awesome with your instruments, both musical and photographic.

Thanks Beth! That was a tricky shoot, but we were all happier with the results of the mirror shot vs the ones shot from the tripod.
